the Cardwell Center. Our goal is to provide top-quality cancer treatment
in a setting that is comfortable and convenient.

The
Cancer Care Team
Cancer
treatment at Martha Jefferson is a team effort. Once a patient has
been evaluated by a primary care physician, he or she is referred
to a surgeon or an oncologist who works with a team of cancer specialists
to determine the optimum individualized treatment plan. When treatment
is under way, the physicians and other oncology professionals meet
regularly for in-depth consultations and to discuss each step of a
patient's care.
The team approach relies on many medical disciplines to provide comprehensive
cancer care including: pathology, radiation oncology, medical oncology,
general surgery, diagnostic radiology, gynecology, urology, otolaryngology
(ear-nose-throat surgical specialty) and plastic and reconstructive
surgery.

oncology research groups that provide patients with the most promising
cancer therapies.

Radiation
Oncology
A high energy linear accelerator with photon and electron beam capability
is used to provide prescribed radiation treatments with accuracy.
The linear accelerator has a number of special safety features that
ensure that the treatment planned is the treatment delivered. Integrated
into the system is a computer with 3-D capability that is used by
the radiation oncologist and a dosimetrist to optimize the treatment
plan. A medical physicist maintains the accuracy of the linear accelerator
through regular monitoring and adjustments.

Tumor
Registry
In
addition to the Cancer Care Center's fine Clinical Staff, the medical
team is supported by the Cancer Registrar, whose collection of data
becomes a valuable tool in understanding and treating the disease.
The Cancer Registry is part of a state and national database, which
is available to the physicians as well. Oncologists at the Cancer
Care Center also have access to the latest treatment information through
the National Cancer Institute's computer network and affiliation with
clinical trials.

Cancer
Resource Center
The
Cancer Resource Center is more than a repository for information.
Its focus is on cancer with a particular interest in breast cancer.
The center offers books, pamphlets and videos concerning cancer in
its various forms, and the center has more: experienced, certified,
oncology nurses who can help direct those who seek information but
also help allay unfounded fears. The Cancer Resource Center is free
and available to anyone in the community with a question about cancer.
